Vida’s work is new to me, and I was very happy to snag this download at a reduced price. Another first: I don’t think I’ve read a novel that featured second-person perspective before. At first it felt distracting, but after a little while this choice of perspective made sense. I was able to immerse myself into the main character’s story and experience it with her. Vida skillfully handles second-person narration in a way that feels precise.I don’t know if I would categorize this novel as a mystery or a thriller, as some reviewers have said. There is a shot of panic at the beginning, but losing her passport in a third-world country turns out to have been the start of an unlikely adventure. If there is a mystery, it’s simply the reader’s question of what drove the main character to Morocco in the first place. When these pieces of the puzzle settle into place, more of the story makes sense. I think of it as more of a thoughtful, finding yourself type of narrative. The next time I travel I'll be thinking about how nobody around me knows who I really am, and how simple it would be to fade into some other story...Many readers would be turned off by the ending of the story. I won’t spoil it for you, but I’ll say it doesn’t tie up nicely and neatly. The adventure continues past the ending of the novel. If an unclear resolution doesn’t upset you, and you’re intrigued with the idea of a character to tries on and sheds a succession of identities, pick this one up!
